Black Ball Projects is a
non-profit 501(c)3 organization

Mission Statement
Black Ball Projects’ mission is to serve and support contemporary artists who are under-exposed and who have been working diligently on the periphery of the greater art world. Diversity of all kinds, be it gender, racial, or economic, is at the core of the Black Ball Projects organization.

Criteria for Support: Artistic Excellence, Mature Practice, Underexposed. What does “underexposed” mean? Black Ball Projects defines an underexposed artist as one who has been working diligently in their studio with a mature practice (10+ years) but with limited success or attention from the contemporary art world or has had setbacks to their art career due to life circumstances beyond their control.

Vision Statement
We conduct our mission through a variety of activities including online viewing rooms (solo and group shows) , promoting the works of the artists involved through our website, social media presence and newsletters to the wider art world.

We are looking forward to creating physical real-world gallery exhibitions again, initially as pop-ups, but with the goal of eventually re-opening our own space.

To further our mission, we look to engage in pairings of under-exposed artists, alongside those who have greater success/exposure, thus creating a platform to promote the interactions of works between those who have been admitted into the art world and those who are still on the periphery.

Our 2021 inaugural micro-granting program was our first step toward direct support to artists. Moving into the future we will be gearing this micro-granting program to those who have been working steadily with nominal success for a minimum of approximately 10 years. The micro-grant program allows for one winner of a larger stipend, but all nominees receive a nominal stipend for applying, allowing us to pay them for their intellectual labor (putting together their application). The process is currently by nomination only.

Looking to the future we hope to add additional programming such as artist-residencies, open calls for exhibitions and the development of educational and community outreach programs for our local community here in Brooklyn and beyond.

These, as well as any other plans that allow our core mission of support for contemporary artists (who are under-exposed) will be created as we grow financially and as the Board of Directors and the Executive Director see fit.
