About

Black Ball Projects was founded in 2015 as a gallery space by artists for artists. Our mission is to serve and support contemporary artists who are underexposed and who have been working diligently on the periphery of the greater art world. Diversity of all kinds, be it gender, racial, or economic, is at the core of our organization.

During the pandemic, Black Ball Projects re-organized from a physical gallery to an online platform, where we have presented online viewing rooms (solo and group shows) and promoted the works of the artists involved through our website, social media presence, and newsletters to the wider art world.

In 2021, thanks to the many generous donations from our supporters, we launched our inaugural micro-granting program. The recipient is awarded a $2000 cash grant, a viewing room on our website and an artist’s talk. All additional nominees receive a $250 stipend for the labor involved in the application process.

Black Ball Projects is currently funded solely through independent donations and sales of donated works from participating artists.

As we move into 2024, we are looking to raise capital to increase both the amounts and frequency of our micro-granting program. Black Ball Projects is also gearing up to begin having physical exhibitions again.

For these important reasons we ask that you support Black Ball Projects in our continuing mission. Any amount is welcome.

In the long term, Black Ball Projects is hoping to add additional programming, such as artist residencies, open calls for exhibitions, development of educational and community outreach programs, as well as a multitude of other opportunities that underexposed contemporary artists need in order to help change the greater art world into a better place for all.

Co-founded in October of 2015 by artists Ana Wolovick, Harriet Salmon and Jason Tomme. Brian Wondergem co-curated and co-directed the space with Wolovick from June 2017-2018. In 2019 Black Ball Projects became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Since 2015 Black Ball Projects produced 29 physical exhibitions, seven online viewing rooms and created our micro- granting program for contemporary artists in need. We created a catalog for our two Post-Trump shows in 2017 entitled ‘Poster/Pre’, and produced ‘PartA- PartB’, a limited-edition box-set of reproductions from 33 emerging and established artists and writers.

Black Ball Projects was selected as part of The New York Times Spring Gallery Guide for two years running (2017-2018) and has been reviewed in The New Yorker, The Village Voice, Vice’s Creator’s Project, The Brooklyn Rail, as well as being selected by multiple sources as Editor’s Picks and Picks of the Week.
